Polini Cup

Polini-mounted Wayne Strickland (007) scored a hard-fought victory in the Senior Pocketbike class at round two of AMMA’s Polini USA Cup. This was the first overall victory of Strickland’s short racing career, but it certainly won’t be his last.

Three pocketbike riders came out to California from Georgia, representing Team Fastline on Polinis. Strickland, Tod McGee and Randy Orza planned on making a statement to the West Coast riders. They did just that on their 50cc mini rockets.

Race one of the Senior class saw Strickland get the holeshot, with McGee tight on his rear and Orza keeping them within striking distance. The three Georgia hotshots checked out. On lap four, McGee slipped by Strickland on the sweeper, only to have Strickland slip underneath him and take back the lead in the tight section. At the checkered flag, the three riders crossed the finish line in a cluster, but Strickland got by the flagger first, beating McGee by one-tenth of a second. Orza came in four-tenths of a second behind McGee. The fourth-placed rider was 11 seconds behind the three leaders.

Race two saw more tight competition, with Orza taking the lead off the start and never relinquishing it. This race saw more bar banging from McGee and Strickland, who made numerous passes on each other. At the finish line, it was Orza winning by two seconds and Strickland and McGee crossing over together. The Polini-mounted guys from Georgia did what they’d intended to do: filled the podium and left the competition in the dust.

The California guys promise to give them stiff competition when they return in June.

The Open class saw more tight racing among the speedsters from Fastline. Race one finished with McGee, Orza and Strickland finishing one, two, three. When the white flag flew in race two, it looked as if the results were going to be the same. However, Southern California youth speedster Andrew Zabzdyr stepped up his game and came out of the final corner wide open and crossed the line next to Strickland for a photo finish, slipping in for third overall by less than one-hundredth of a second. Zabzdyr kept the Team Fastline Polini riders from leaving California with a 1-2-3 sweep of both classes they contested. Expect to see a lot more of Zabzdyr on the podium in coming years.

The largest race of the day was the Moped class, with 26 entrants. The racing proved to be entertaining, with the lead mopeds exceeding 60 mph on the straights. In the end, the overall victory went to Tommy Erst. He was closely followed by John Quintos and Jeff Johnsen.

In this second round of the Polini USA Cup, there were racers registered from California, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado. Round three promises to have racers representing even more states.
