Stator / Ignition

Postby joshua2 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:33 pm

HI I think I have bad stator on my 2006 X3 the bike starts and runs good on the stand but misses very badly at high rpm. It seem to run strong until about 3/4 rpm then breaks up. This problem started last week. This is my first Polini so I dont know much about the differnt years or any chnges that may have taken place. My stator has only one wire, checks @ 375 ohms and is grounded well as is the coil. Does anyone have a good stator for sale or maybe I could send you mine and you could test it on a proven bike.
Thanks Rick

Check ALL connections first.. Look for any possible signs of kinked wires. Split the wiring back and check if you suspect a spot. Especially check for any possible soldiered spot, where wires could've come loose. Check on the spark plug, that small screw-cap thingy, check it.. if that's loose, it will cause it to "break" up like that.

From there, are you sure you're not just running lean on top?? You may have a jetting issue.. how has it run before? Lower the clip (which raises the needle) one spot on the needle, though really you may need to fatten the main up one size. If not jetting, check for any air leaks.. around the reed boot area especially. Get some gasket material from an auto parts store, and cut some new gaskets for the reed area anyway. Put two.. one on each side of the reed cage. Then make sure your carb is attached snugly to the manifold/reed boot, so as not to suck air past there. But, don't wrench it so tight you ruin the boot.

Thanks for the ideas. I have checked most everything, I will go over it one again. I can try a bigger main but this does not act like jetting. Are the igintion systems on these bike pretty reliable. I had two Cobras prior to the Polini, great bikes but the pre 05 PVL ignitions were worthless. Just hoping I dont have that problem again. Any body know what a stator costs?

The ignition systems are fine.. We never had a coil "go out". Not that it can't, we just never had one that did. The stators are more susceptible to it than the coils, but not nearly as bad as the Cobra's. The problem nearly always is the wiring on the Polini. Still.. with you saying yours OHMs out at 375, it sounds like you might have a connection issue, since it's cutting out when running. Or.. it's not an ignition issue at all, and maybe an air leak..

we have had the same issues...all have been solved by adjusting the gap on our spark plug...we run an ngk br9eix gap set around 22-26...rock river said to set gap at 34...i did and it does the same thing u r experiancing. its always gonna be in your gap. i have never owned a bike to be so gap sensitive.
